Locals Spark Hurricanes To Win Championship
The Brooklyn Hurricanes Junior Midget Football team, ages 12-13, capped a successful 2008 season by defeating the Liberty Lions of Baltimore, Maryland 19-0 to win the American Youth Football League I-95 Eastern Regional Bowl Championship. The team finished the season 7-3, in the highly competitive Big Apple Football Conference. The Rockaway Peninsula was well represented with 13 players on this year's team, including five award winners.
On January 3, the following boys were honored at the team's annual awards dinner; Jack Hurley (Belle Harbor), MVP; James Wolfer (Rockaway Park), Coaches Award; Mike Ferro (Belle Harbor),Outstanding Defensive Player, Matt Crockett (Breezy Point) and Outstanding Defensive Lineman; Ryan McDade (Belle Harbor), Outstanding Defensive Back.
Other key contributors to the team's success this season from the peninsula include: Ryan Killgallen; Charles Marquat; TJ Stackpole; Mark Genovese; Matt Corrigan; Jimmy Buckley; John Strehle and Billy Moran.
