Baxter Likes Simon For Council

Dear Editor,

There are quite a few candidates running for the council seat vacated by Joseph Addabbo. Addabbo did only bad things for this community. He was on the Waterfront Committee of the City Council. He stood and watched along with our useless community board, developers breaking every coastal law in the book. Now at least, the city planning commission is forced to comply with federal laws in a coastal zone boundary. All of Rockaway and Broad Channel are in a coastal zone boundary guided by city, state and federal laws, with the federal government having oversight and enforcement powers in any development. So much for that.

Lew Simon is one of the candidates seeking the council seat. I believe we should give him a chance despite all his faults. Lew is always there rain or shine, speaking for us no matter what is going on. If only he could stop exaggerating the truth he could be Governor. Leaving all that aside, how could we go wrong by electing him? No one in my memory of fifty years here has done more for Rockaway than Lew Simon. And that goes for the ones elected. Lew is not afraid to speak out. Sometimes I feel he has a pair so big he carries them around in a potato sack. It is more than sixty years since a candidate from Rockaway was elected to the council. Let's change that and elect our own man.

JOHN BAXTER
