DOE Sets Dates For Kindergarten Registration

The New York City Department of Education has announced important dates for families interested in enrolling their children in Kindergarten in September 2009. Families should apply in person by March 2 at every school they are interested in having their child attend, including their zoned school. Schools will send assignment offers to families in mid-March. To accept an offer, families must visit the school that made the offer by April 13 to pre-register their child.

Children are eligible for Kindergarten if they will turn five years old by December 31, 2009, and will be residents of New York City by the time they pre-register.

Families must show the following documentation when they apply to a school:

•Proof of residence. Any two of the following

documents:

•A residential utility bill (gas or electric)

in the resident's name and dated

within the last 60 days;

•Documentation or letter on letterhead

from a federal, state, or local government agency indicating the

resident's name and address and

dated within the last 60 days;

•An original lease agreement, deed, or

mortgage statement for the residence;

•A current property tax bill for the residence;

•A water bill for the residence dated

within the last 60 days;

•Official payroll documentation from

an employer dated within the last 60 days, such as a form submitted for tax withholding purposes or payroll receipt (a letter on the employer's letterhead will not be accepted);

In addition, applicants must have: •Child's birth certificate or passport; •Child's immunization records;

•Names of any siblings who will be in

grades 1-5 at the school in 2009-10.

Zoned schools will give priority to students who live in the zone, as they have in the past. The complete list of priorities schools will use to make assignments, from highest to lowest, is as follows:

1. Zoned students with a sibling who

will be in grades 1-5 at the school in

2009-10;

2. All other zoned students

3. In-district students from outside the

zone with a sibling who will be in

grades 1-5 at the school in 2009-10;

4. Out-of-district students with a sibling

who will be in grades 1-5 at the

school in 2009-10;

5. All other in-district students from

outside the zone;

6. All other out-of-district students.
