PHC Celebrates Women's Heart Health Hospital Staff Will 'Go Red For Women'
February 6 is National Wear Red Day and Peninsula Hospital Center will join millions across the country when it will "Go Red" for Women's Heart Health. The entire Rockaway community is invited to join the celebration of Women's Heart Health Day by participating in health checks, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, nutritional guidance, and stroke and diabetes awareness sessions in the lobby at the hospital on February 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"Go Red for Women" celebrates the energy, passion and power that women today have taken on as they band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke in their lifetime. The goal of the American Heart Association this February during Heart Health Month is to reduce the incidence of heart attacks and strokes in women by 10 percent. In an attempt to squash beliefs that heart disease affects men more than women, many health organizations have directed a new focus on women's heart health. Approximately 53 percent of heart attack deaths occur in females. According to the Center for Disease Control, many of these are largely preventable with healthy eating and regular physical activity. It is also important to know the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke and to be prepared with a plan.
Due to the participation of millions of people across the country, the color red and the red dress now stand for the ability all women have to improve their heart health and live stronger, longer lives. Everyone participating in Peninsula Hospital Center's Go Red for Women Day is encouraged to sport his or her red shirt, dress, hat, tie, or piece of clothing as a statement of solidarity with the rest of the country during this day of celebration of women's heart health.
The "Go Red" event at Peninsula Hospital is designed to bring women together for this special day and further educate them about their risks of heart disease and stroke. There will be a myriad of heart-healthy information available to take home and study, as well as the opportunity to speak with and ask questions of members of the hospital's Cardiology, Traumatic Brain Injury and Nutrition Departments. Representatives of Visiting Nurse Services of New York will also be on hand to assist with the dissemination of information and answer questions about diabetes.
As part of "Go Red" Day, members of the Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary will be in the lobby distributing information from the American Heart Association and signing up people for the hospital's quarterly blood drive, which will be held on Monday, February 23.
Additionally, there will be hand-outs, prizes and surprises awaiting those who join the staff in celebrating Women's Heart Health.
