Another Community Center Closing

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter as a concerned resident, parent and community member in Far Rockaway. We have recently been informed that the community center on Beach 57 Street in Ocean Bay is being closed on January 20. When given numbers to call with questions and concerns, we are transferred all over and get nowhere. We currently have a petition going around to SAVE OUR COMMUNITY CENTER. This center used to provide many programs in the morning for adults, such as computer and GED classes. More importantly, a free after school program for our youth ages six to 12 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. They help out children with homework, they have sports and many recreational activities. In the evenings there is Teen Night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., where just about 150 youths in the community go to hang out, have fun and stay off the streets. There is nothing left in Rockaway for youth to do anymore and yet again the city is taking something else away. The crime rate is bad enough where I live. What are they going to do now? Where are the young children going to go while their parents are at work during after school hours? And the summer camp program is going too? I hope with the interest of our community children in mind you can get our story out there and help us save the community center.
