Locals Make Immediate Impact For College Teams

By Elio Velez

Two freshman basketball players from the Rockaways have made a quick impact for their college teams.

Ryan Pearson, a freshman forward who is playing at George Mason University in Virginia and Michele Cashen, a Yale University freshman forward, were honored by their respective conferences for Rookie of the Week.

With an aerial prowess and ability to run the floor, Pearson, a 6-6, 230- pound forward has twice this season won the Colonial Athletic Association award. George Mason's record is 11-3.

Michelle Cashen, who starred at Midwood High School, captured Ivy League Rookie of the Week Honors on December 29, 2008. The Belle-Harbor native's 12-point and eight rebound performance in a Yale 75-66 victory at University of California Irvine helped her win the Ivy League honors.
