John 'Jack' King
John King, a 36-year Belle Harbor resident, died January 4.
King was born in Brooklyn and moved his family to Rockaway in 1972. From the onset, he was active in the Rockaway community. He coached CYO baseball for St. Francis de Sales Church and later ran the parish's baseball program. In the 1980s, King became active in local civic associations, rising to president of the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association and the 100 Precinct Community Council. He also helped create civic organizations including the Rockaway Action Committee, Arverne Civic Association and Rockaway Park Civic Association. He was a World War II veteran of the US Navy, a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a former member of the community advisory board for Peninsula Hospital.
King was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen King.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor Ferrise King; children, Jacqueline Alagna, Deborah McNamara and Paul King; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was at St. Francis de Sales Church. In lieu of flowers, a donation in King's name can be made to the 100 Precinct Explorers.
