Local Youth Named Ambassador In Leadership Program
Maura Hennessey, of Breezy Point, will attend the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. The 13-year-old received her invitation from Mary Eisenhower, the granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, because of her past participation and success as an Ambassador in the People to People World Leader-ship Program.
During her first visit to Washington, Hennessey met with several congressional aides, toured many historical monuments and attended a formal dinner at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, where she was able to meet the Saudi Arabian Ambassador and spoke briefly in Arabic. This visit also included a visit to the White House, a tour of the US Congress and the International Spy Museum. One of her favorite activities was a dinner cruise and dance aboard a yacht on the Potomac River.Hennessey will witness, from a front row view, the swearing in of President Barack Obama and his inaugural address. She will then attend an Inaugural Ball and a performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Hennessey is an Honor student at the Scholars' Academy. She credits her success to hard work, discipline, a desire to succeed, and her parents' constant encouragement. She also considers herself fortunate to have outstanding teachers. Her hobbies include playing the piano, volleyball and serving the community.
