Hopes for 2009

Dear Editor,

The year 2009 is here. Let's hope it is a better year. I know that is a worn out expression, but it fits. Let's hope and pray for an end to people losing jobs, homes and pensions at a brisk pace. May we find a solution to our war on terror and not blame political parties for its perceived failures. May we do as instructed in the bible; forgive our enemies as we wish to be forgiven. May Israel see an end of hostilities with Hamas and all of her many enemies. Last year was a very bad year in a lot of ways, but let's not lose sight of the blessings we still have. Walk ten minutes in any given direction in Rockaway and you will see that as bad as you may think you have it, there are those who have it a lot worse. An end to the asinine building boom in Rockaway would be nice. Wouldn't a college, minor league hockey arena, or an aquarium be better than 99-cent stores, Chinese food restaurants and hair product salons? In the new year may we find a way to help those without homes and jobs, those battling mental illness, alcohol and drug addictions, and may we find a way to hate less and laugh more.
