Black Ice Turns Motorist Upside Down

By Howard Schwach

An Arverne man driving southbound on Cross Bay Boulevard on December 24 found himself skidding across the three-lane roadway and flipping over several times before coming to a stop upside down, police say.

Darren Herbert, 45, of Almeda Avenue, told police that he was driving southbound on Cross Bay Boulevard at the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge, when he encountered black ice and began skidding and lost control of his vehicle.

The 2000 Lincoln Suburban struck the right lane barrier hard and began flipping over, Herbert said.

Herbert managed to climb out of the car and was sitting nearby when the first responders arrived on the scene.

He was transported to Jamaica Hospital by EMS ambulance and was treated for an injured arm and shoulder.

Hospital sources say that he was treated and released.

Police say that the black ice problem on the bridge was "severe" and the Department of Sanitation was called to put sand and salt on the bridge to remove the icing conditions.
