Students Campaign Against Pollution

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Environmentor Environmental Education students at Ocean Bay Community Center have started a campaign on pollution and shore debris as a result of plastic bottles.

Currently, there is no law in New York City mandating the recycling of all plastic bottles.

As a result, bottles from all parts of the city make their way to Rockaway's waterfront.

Students learned about the many ways to effectively have their opinions heard.

They wrote letters to politicians and created art pieces that expressed their desire to have the Bigger Better Bottle Bill passed in Albany, as well as solicited for recycling receptacles and litter baskets on the boardwalk.

Local activist Abby Murray, the guest speaker, told the students of her efforts to promote clean and safe beaches in Rockaway through community coalitions and petition writing.
