Privatizing To Rid The 'Slobs'
Dear Editor,

I think the time has come to seriously consider either coming up with some sort of privatization of the beachfront or charging to go to the beach, like they do in Long Beach, Long Island. Anytime I walk along the boardwalk in the late afternoon, I see a lot of garbage left behind by non-residents. Granted, there aren't that many baskets this year, but that's no excuse to just dump your garbage

on the beach

and leave.

The city government has deemed us a residential community, with a beach. And it is our beach. Why should we share it with these slobs? And when was the last time you heard about a local resident drowning in the surf, quite some time. Charging for the beach would keep all of these slobs out of here. I don't even go to the beach anymore, and I have lived here for 45 years.

Also, I doubt there would be any more drownings. With the extra money we could get somemore baskets, hire somemore lifeguards and who knows, maybe repair the boardwalk.

And in all the time I've lived here I never heard of beach goers assaulting a lifeguard. Does Long Beach have these problems? I don't think so.

JAMES MURRAY
