Beach Volleyball League Celebrates Independence Day

The paper had to go to press early this week due to the 4th of July holiday on Friday, so there can be no stories of the weekly RBVL volleyball trials and tribulations.

However, this is a fine time to reflect on the fates of teams traveling in both positive and negative directions. Pennant races are heating up in the Wave division where the Big Mahooshkas, Brooklyn Window and Door, McCarthy & Kelly, the Sand Spikers and the Wharf Rats are all within three points of first place.

The Beach division shows Sand-Bar Construction, Connolly's, the Bay House Babes, the Beach House and the Sunrise Senior Living Sharks within five points of each other just as Boarders Surf Shop, Blackwater Cheese Fries, JG Electric, Jameson's Turtles and the Breakaways are in the Boardwalk group.

Only three points separate the top four squads in the Sun division - the Harbor Light, Kerry Hills Pub, Average Joes and the Lobster House. Simon Says Sea Bar and Robin Shapiro Realty Island are tied for the top spot in the Moon with Last Call, bhyc.com, Coral Reefers and the Beach Orphans right behind.

Finally, Freedhand's sits in their usual spot atop the Ocean division with contenders (pretenders) Sullivan and Galleshaw and Mark's Maintenance trailing behind.

On the downside, fights for the final playoff spots are being waged by Coppersmith's, Flip-Cup All- Stars and Jameson's in the Ocean; Federation, Healy's Ratpack and the Blue Bungalow in the Wave; the Bayview Barracudas, It's All Good Tees and the Wave in the Beach; the Rockaway Breakers, Happy Hour and EZ Knights in the Moon and almost everybody in the Sun.

The printing presses are rolling as this week's party is taking place at Connolly's so no one knows right now how the party actually went.

But let's take a guess by reviewing last year's results. "What other sponsor features its owner manning the BBQ grill, cooking up hundreds of hot dogs and cheeseburgers for the ball players?" None!

Once again, Jeff outdid himself, feeding the throngs from the minute the first patrons arrived to the point where no one could eat any more. Good on you, Connolly's! That's the way to satisfy the evergrowing chowhounds of the RBVL. And the extra bartenders were a nice touch. When you are as consistent as Connolly's has been from day one you can write a review in advance.

The RBVL schedule now heads into its "Outdoor" section, with the next four parties featuring waterfront bars, starting next week with the Lobster House and then moving to the Bay House in Breezy Point, Pier 92 and the Wharf.

A recent and popular tradition calls for the last party of the season to be held at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on August 6.

And then the grand finale takes place at Riis Park on Saturday, August 9, when the playoffs determine six champions.

As always, if you have any questions during the week, please call Patty Moule at 917-613-0908 (Be sure to call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.). Or just check our website at www.rbvl.com. You'll find the answers to most of your questions there, not to mention pretty pictures and funny stories.

See you on the beach! (And enjoy the photos.)
