Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York Parks and Recreation came up with a plan to "improve the environment and enhance public health" by planting trees throughout the New York City area. I thought it was a good idea until I started thinking about the long term effects, i.e. roots growing and at some point disturbing the sidewalk and the possibility of the branches causing problems with the power lines. I decided to file a complaint by calling 311. A representative took my information and it was forwarded to Fiona Watt, Chief of Forestry and Horticulture of City of New York Parks and Recreation. In her letter to me she stated that the trees are being planted on city property and in essence, there is nothing that I can do about it. So why do I have to take care of a tree that I did not ask for? And I am not the only homeowner who feels this way. According to some homeowners who reside on Gateway Boulevard in Far Rockaway, they received a letter from milliontreesnyc, A Plan Initiative with NYC Parks and New York Restoration Project, stating that the tree needs to be watered once a week, but with rising water prices who can afford to do so? The letter also states that every spring the tree will need more mulch. Who is supposed to buy the mulch and apply it? What's next?
