The Fourth Of July: Not Just A Day To Barbeque Hot Dogs
Many people see Independence Day, the Fourth of July, as just another holiday; a day off from work to get together with family and friends and hold a backyard barbeque. As we eat our hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs and buttered corn, however, we should give some thought to liberty and democracy and those who have made it possible for us to enjoy the things that make America unique in the world. There is a long, straight line from those minutemen who died at Lexington and Concord to the men and women fighting today in such far-away places as Afghanistan and Iraq. Without those willing to put their lives on the line to protect yours, you might well not be enjoying a day off from work in the safety of your family. Give them some thought, lift a glass high in their honor. Liberty and democracy are not abstracts but realities to be honored and preserved. Honor them as well as the men and women who have kept them alive and continue to do so today.
