Local Busted For Cocaine Possession
Recover Drugs And Money
By Miriam Rosenberg

Officers of the 101 Precinct Anticrime Team, a three-person team that operates on patrol but in civilian clothing, have arrested a Brookhaven Avenue man for possession of cocaine that police say weighed more than a half-ounce. In addition, the crime team s recovered nearly $10,000 in cash, police sources told The Wave this week.

Police Officer Douglas Rome and his partners were on patrol in Far Rockaway on May 11, riding in the vicinity of Beach 22 Street and Loretta Road, when they allegedly saw a man, later identified by police and court sources as Joseph Azaro, throw a clear plastic bag to the ground near a house at 22-10 Loretta Road.

Court records provided by the office of Queens District Attorney Richard Brown allege that Azaro resisted arrest by flailing "his arms and kicking his legs in an attempt to avoid being handcuffed."

Police subdued Azaro, however, and transported him to the 101 Precinct house for questioning and processing.

Rome said in his affidavit filed in Queens Supreme Court that "[Azaro] did knowingly and unlawfully process a narcotic drug with [the] intent to sell it…and intentionally prevent or attempt to prevent a police officer or a peace officer from affecting an authorized arrest of himself or another person."

According to the reports from the NYPD and the DA's office, a total of two large clear bags of powered cocaine weighing approximately 18 grams were recovered at the scene. Also seized was $9,828 in cash, which was reportedly hidden away in Azaro's wristband. Azaro has been charged with criminal procession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree and resisting arrest. Police report that a NYSID check revealed that Azaro has nine previous arrests - two for the sale of narcotics.
