Made By Non-Union Labor
Dear Editor,

I read with great interest in last week's Wave and New York Times that Rockaway Congressman Anthony Weiner drives a government-financed Chevy Impala, while the peoplefinanced car of choice for Rockaway Congressman Gregory Meeks is a Toyota Lexus. It's a tremendous car, the Lexus, but does Congressman Meeks know that it is built by nonunion labor and that, although it may be assembled outside Toronto (but most probably in Japan), the profits definitely go to Tokyo?

Coke's CEO, I wonder, does he drink Pepsi? How about the boys at Boeing...do you think they fly Airbus 320's? Who thinks Michael Dell computes with a Fujitsu laptop? So why does an American Congressman drive a Japanese car...is it out of ignorance, I wonder, or maybe just plain triumphant narcissism?

Personally, I have no great love for today's union movement as it stimulates, not inventiveness nor innovation, but stodginess and lethargy... regrettably two great traits of America's Big Three car companies. But, I must point out that it is Congressman Meeks' party, the Democrat machine that proudly and loudly backs unionism. On the whole they advocate for more unionism and in fact seek to boost - with up-coming legislation - unionism power and dues.

So I find it somewhat ironic that tomorrow, maybe, Congressman Meeks might be at the podium pounding away for legislation to give more power to what I would call a debilitating movement, unionism; and then drive home in a Japanese luxuryclass, union-less car.

Elmer Gantry would be delighted...

PETER J. STUBBEN
