Wildlife Sanctuary Hosts 'Planting With Sprouts' Workshop
Julia Daudelin, a kindergarten teacher at P.S. 47, and Ranger Julia, of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, hosted a free program where young sprouts, ages 4 and up, explored plants parts from roots to buds with their families. In celebration of National Park Week and Volunteer Week, the workshop was held on Sunday, April 27, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The workshop educated children and their families about plants and inspired them to start gardening.
Participants also walked through well-groomed trails, listened and watched birds, and observed what appeared to be spider nests. America's national parks provide many opportunities to educate visitors of all ages about their natural and cultural history. Gateway National Recreation Area has a diverse ecosystem, from ocean beaches to maritime forests, freshwater ponds and salt water marshes; the park has many environments that contain a wide variety of wildlife. Over 300 species of birds use the park during spring and fall migration.
