RAA Opens Our Beaches With Whalemina

Pictured is Whalemina at her original home in the Central Park Children's Zoo.
The Parks Department, Arverne by the Sea, Rockaway Beach Civic Association, Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) and Connolly's are celebrating the beginning of Rockaway's summer season with Whalemina on Friday, May 23 at 11 a.m. on Beach 94 Street and Shore Front Parkway.

In the 1990's the late Sal Arena discovered that the whale in the Central Park Children's Zoo was being removed and asked the NYC Department of Parks if it could be relocated to Rockaway Beach. With the help of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association and Community Board 14, this transition occurred and she was moved to her new home on Beach 94 Street.

Since then she has gone through various stages of renovation with the help of neighbors, parks volunteers, artist volunteers, and missionaries from the Mormon Church. Grants and donations also made the renovations possible.

During the event, spectators can view sand sculptures, the Beach Channel High School Marching Band, a Riverhead Mock Dolphin rescue, the MS 202 band, and Indaculture Live.
Artists worked endlessly on restoring the mosaic.
