City Department Needs Volunteers The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) needs volunteers for their Beach Floatable program. DEP monitors 41 beaches around the city including Beach 9 Street, Beach 79 Street, Beach 99 Street, Beach 129 Street, Breezy Point, Riis Park and Fort Tilden. Volunteers are needed to conduct weekly surveys for the swimming season, May 1 through October; 20 minutes per week; one to two hours after high tide. Volunteers monitor and record the various types of debris and floatables that are present on the beach. Floatables are waterborne waste materials that float. Styrofoam, balloons, fishing line, medical waste and raw sewage are considered floatables. Volunteers do not have to touch or pick up anything. They will receive all material necessary for the monitoring.
