Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Holds Final Pre-Season Meeting
By Joe McGivney

The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League held their final pre-season meeting at the Kerry Hills Pub in preparation for the upcoming summer session. Captains handed in their rosters, uniform orders and paid their fee balances to insure a place in one of the many divisions.

Any absent teams have until Monday night, May 5, to deliver their money and rosters directly to Denise at her home (418 Beach 131 St.). You can call her (347-866-4570) to let her know you're coming or just leave an envelope in her mailbox with a check and your roster.

No spots will be held past Monday night! There are 10 teams on the waiting list and we will begin to notify them next week if we are able to take them in. The following teams from 2007 are delinquent and in danger of losing their places in the league: Freedhand's, Mark's Maintenance, Lobster House, Happy Hour, Coppersmith's, Jameson's, Aviator Aces, Sunrise Senior Living, Borders Surf Shop, Sand Spikers, Wharf Rats and the Harbor Light.

Bugsy reminded everyone of upcoming key dates, particularly Wednesday, May 21, which will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night and this year, there will be a full exhibition schedule of games posted.

All new referees and uncertified veteran referees are required to come to the beach with their whistles on that day for a brief seminar and training session. You may even get in some practice work. It will also be the first party of the season and uniforms and schedules will be given out at the bar afterward. That sounds like another good reason to come out on May 21.

On May 28, it will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 9. On that Saturday, the league championships will be played with the RBVL Awards Dinner to follow on Friday, September 12.

It's never too early to be reminded of the three rules that will be enforced again this year at every level of play without exception: 1) ALL net violations must be called - no exceptions. 2) NO underhand lift or reverse underhand throws are allowed. (The only exception is on a hard-driven ball.) 3) NO reaching over the net to interfere with a ball unless your opponent is directing the ball to your side of the court.

For those players who think that this results in too many whistles and say, 'We just want to play'; get used to it. Remember, we all just want to play - - - volleyball! Not jungle ball!

It will only be a few short weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions or issues please call Patty Moule at 917-613- 0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.).

Also, take two minutes to visit our website at www.rbvl.com.

See you on the beach on May 21.
