Joseph Hila
Retired Maintenance Worker

Joseph Hila, a 43-year Rockaway resident, died April 26.

Hila was born in Brooklyn. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as an air brake maintenance worker with the New York City Transit Authority and retired after 30 years. According to his family, he enjoyed bicycling and playing handball in Rockaway Beach and was a believer in vitamins, exercise and cold beer. He defeated cancer three times, but succumbed at the age of 93.

He is survived by his sister, Betty, of Brooklyn; brother, Bill (Alice) of New Port Richey, Florida; nieces, Liz (Harold) Graham and Susan (Lloyd) Gittler; nephews, Bill (Robin) and Chris (Liz); and 11 grand-nieces and - nephews.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.
