The victim, later identified by police as Rahim Sutton, 33, of 84-14 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, was transported to Peninsula Hospital Center, where he was declared dead at about 11:53 p.m. Sources say that Sutton was shot in the forearm, chest, abdomen and lower back. Witnesses told police that he was shot in the courtyard but managed to make his way into the lobby, apparently aiming for the elevator, but he never made it. Sutton had been arrested in 1994 in Yonkers, New York, for raping a 13- year-old babysitter. He was convicted in that city a year later. He served several years in prison and was released from the supervision of the Department of Parole in 2005.
In January of this year, Sutton was scooped up by police in a drug sweep in the city housing complex, in which 33 were busted. At the time, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown termed Hammels as an "open air drug market." Sutton was given a criminal court complaint charging various drug violations. His case has been moving slowly through the justice system, sources say. Detectives from the 100 Precinct Squad and Queens Homicide are investigating. Anybody with information on Sutton's murder should call the squad at 718-318-4221.
