Rally To Protect Rent Regulated Housing

A campaign rally to push local elected officials to reform the State's rent laws will be held in Far Rockaway on Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Church located at 1920 New Haven Avenue.

Housing advocates, tenants, members of labor and housing groups that include, New York is Our Home and Housing Here and Now, will protest weak housing laws that led to the elimination of thousands of affordable housing units in New York City.

According to the campaign, median rents have risen almost 10 percent while the average household income dropped by more than six percent between 2002-2005. Advocates predict that based on these figures, without a change in the laws, the city will lose more than 136,000 regulated housing units between 2006 and 2015.
