Rockaway Rotary Ocean Run Draws 171 Runners Despite Inclement Weather

Despite a constant driving rain, 171 intrepid runners and walkers stepped off on the boardwalk from Beach 116 Street last Sunday for the 30th edition of the Rockaway Rotary Ocean Run, sponsored by Sweet N'Low.

The weather had many participants huddling under a tent until the race actually began.

Rotary members register participants prior to the race. A surprising number showed up to run, despite the inclement weather.
Local kids await the beginning of the children's race, which was held prior to the main event.
This year's race was dedicated to civic and arts activist Barbara Eisenstadt. Her husband, Marvin, stands in front of a poster honoring his late wife.
Retired teacher Barbara McDermott, who has run in many of the previous races, uses her walker to assist her this year.
Paul Hedderson, the first person over the line, came in at 17 minutes and 33 seconds.
Brian Baumann, Hedderson's cousin, was the second person over the line, clocking in at 17:42.
The third male over the line was Jim Lunny at 17:44.
The first female runner to cross the finish line was Meghan Hayes, who came in at 20:08.
Rotary President Rabbi Melvyn May presents a special award to Barbara Eisenstadt that was given to her husband, Marvin, the sponsor of the race.
The second female runner to cross the line was Michelle Curley, who came in at 20:35.
Noreen Gildea ran the race in 21:11 and was the third female over the line.
