The Diary Of A Green Thumb
The Gift Of Spring For Mother's Day
Commentary By Danielle McShane Danielle's Rockaway Florist

DANIELLE McSHANE
Blooming plants make great gifts for moms who enjoy gardening. So many colorful plants will soon be available for the garden, so you can give mom the gift of spring this Mother's Day. A big part of enjoyment in the garden is the time away from it all! Avid gardeners take a break from cleaning, phone calls, and everyday chores for planting and pruning in the garden. After all, these wonderful little plants often grow to full, colorful blossoms that bring joy the whole family can share. Planting from seed may be a bit challenging, but no worries. Gorgeous hanging baskets and flats will give an immediate satisfaction once mom begins to plant them in the garden.

Tomatoes, vegetables and fruit may be the perfect gift for the mom who likes to cook! This summer she may enjoy a fruit salad from the vines of grapes or strawberries she grew herself. We all know how different a dish can taste with fresh herbs. You can pile-high different fruit and vegetable plants in a wicker basket and give your mom, the chef, the perfect Mother's Day gift. Of course, being a good chef does not mean that she has much experience with gardening, but for the most part, plants need a little attention and a lot of love which moms are naturally good at! It wouldn't hurt to give her plants with easy to follow instructions, too!

I just started to carry a new line of fruit and blooming plants that are all attractively packaged with complete care instructions on the back. Perfect for the mom who doesn't quite have a green thumb! Each plant is just beginning to sprout, and they are all ready for planting. There are many varieties of blooming plants and vines such as peony bushes, hostas, day lilies and clematis. There is a shade collection of flowering plants, and a fruit collection of strawberries, blueberries, grapes and more. Since, year after year, my customers are looking for more practical, low maintenance ideas for the garden, I thought this might help. Especially because the success of these plants is made easy with clear instructions.

The most common geraniums and impatients offer an easy care, long lasting flower for the garden, and are available in flats and small pots. Mom may want nothing more for Mother's Day than to receive the gift of "spring," and to plant a garden together as a family. Together, mom, dad and the kids can share a fun project that everyone will enjoy!

Keep in mind though, even with a low maintenance garden, some moms just don't have the time to take care of these plants. If mom is always working, always running, or traveling a lot, I would suggest surprising her with a vase of fresh cut, colorful flowers. There are so many in season, there is almost no end to the possibilities. Bold gerbera daisies, cheerful lilies, tulips and iris are just a few to mention. Lilacs, peonies and hydrangea are among the most popular here at the florist. Any combination you choose, fresh flowers are a sure way of putting a smile on mom's face.

Now don't forget, Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11. Order early to ensure that mom receives her very favorite flowers for her garden or dining room table this Mother's Day.
