Browne Lights Up Garden

17-year-old Marcus Browne traveled great distances but the Rockaway native achieved his boxing goal of winning the 165-pound novice medal in the New York Daily News Golden Gloves last Thursday night.

Browne, who has to travel two hours daily to attend Concord High School in Staten Island and train at the local PAL, easily defeated Shaka Davidson in the novice final at the WaMu Theater next door to Madison Square Garden.

In front of a packed crown, Browne knocked down Davidson once in the first round and forced his opponent to take three standing eight counts.

Browne easily got the decision to win his first Golden Gloves medal.
