The boardwalk run, dedicated this year to the memory of civic activist and arts patron Barbara Eisenstadt, the event features two races, a 5K race for all-comers and a quarter-mile children's race. Apost-race party and award ceremony will be held at The Irish Circle located on Beach 102 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Eisenstadt, who passed away late last year, was, along with her husband, Marvin, a long-time sponsor of the race. She was also involved in the Rockaway Museum and the Rockaway Music And Arts Council, as well as with the Peninsula Hospital Center. During the hey-day of running in the 1980's and 1990's, up to 2,000 runners took part in the annual race. Recently, however, those numbers have been cut drastically with the decrease in the interest in running and the proliferation of races all over the city.
Last year's race, in a beak with tradition, was run at on the Riis Park boardwalk, but coordinators have moved it back to its traditional venue at Beach 116 Street this year. Awards are given to the first three overall finishers (male and female); and top male and female finishers in age groups 11 and under; 12-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-70, and 70 and over. Special awards will be given to members of the police, parks, fire, and sanitation departments, and physically challenged persons. This year, a special award will be given to the fastest Rotarian in district 7250. Runners can register on the day of the race at Beach 116 Street on the boardwalk. T-shirts and race numbers should be picked up on race day, between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at Beach 116 Street on the boardwalk. Numbers will not be issued after 10 a.m.
