Community Defies Rain To Prepare For Rockaway Earth Day
By Miriam Rosenberg

Volunteers of all ages rush to get the planting done as thunder, lightning and heavy rain make their way to the area. The sculpture garden will be unveiled at the Earth Day celebration on May 3.
A rainstorm last Saturday didn't stop the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, the Department of Environmental Protection, friends, neighbors and PS 43 students from doing plantings, designing a sculpture garden and last minute cleanups off Beach 29 Street and the boardwalk, in preparation for Rockaway Earth Day celebrations on May 3. The cleanup was dedicated to Jackie Bosley, who died earlier in the week.
After the rains, people got back to the job of planting.
During the rain delay, RWA's Jeanne Dupont, right, speaks with Jennifer Callahan, the co-producer and director of "The Bungalows of Rockaway" about the efforts to save the bungalow area.
Henry Smart; environmental sculpture artist Ethan Long; Queens Councilman and mayoral candidate Tony Avella, who "has been a big supporter of the Rockaway bungalow community," according to the RWA's Dupont; and Nikki Burnett, 8, plant a tree in remembrance of
