For the moment the bay is alive with flatties, providing a much needed shot in the arm for all in the fishy business. Throughout the bay, east, west, north and south fish are being caught. Simple recipe, chum heavy, bait up with mussels or worms and with some patience you should get them going. What makes Jamaica Bay so special is its bottom. Mud flats, mussel and clam beds, dropoffs and ledges. Poke around and you cover a lot of good fishing grounds. Here and there covering the bay, I can see the rods bending and boats sitting on the anchor. Woodhull, the flats off 59 Street, Silver Hole, all seem to be holding fish on the various parts of the tide. So get on 'em while they last. Tuesday also marked the opening of the 2008 Striped Bass season in New York. Up on the banks along the marshes, birds are working pods of small bass herding bait into the shallows. Overhead, Ospreys can be seen stretching their wings as they keep an eye on things. Occasionally they'll pluck a bunker from the surface. Bunker schools are being worked throughout the bay with some transient bass moving in. This next moon and its downside should be good. The regulars up in Inwood Park, fishing from shore, are building in numbers as they anticipate a run of fish. That's the good thing about our bay. Even cruising the shoreline by car, you run into fisherman. They stake claim to the coves and points starting in the back and moving right along with the tide.
It really is amazing, because the same faces resurrect year after year. So here we go. Fishing is upon us. Another season to enjoy.
