Local Receives Goldwater Scholarship
He was chosen from 1,035 undergraduates nominated by college and university faculty across the country. Laker, a biology/English major and a math and science honor student, copyedits and writes a technology column for the school newspaper, conducts cancer research, and runs on the track team while carrying a pre-med course load. "I derive great pleasure from applying science to my life and would like to discover new ideas and innovations in healing that would make this a better, healthier world," he says. He is strongly considering the pursuit of a MD/ PhD degree that will allow him to combine medicine with research in cellular biology or biochemistry.
Laker's classmate Ross Radusky of Neponsit received honorable mention from the Goldwater Foundation, which runs the scholarship program. Radusky, who is majoring in chemistry with a concentration in biochemisty, is a member of the Macaulay Honors College and a math and natural sciences honors student at Queens College.
