CB 14 Answers Concerns About Tree Plantings

While everyone seems to be happy with the many new trees being planted throughout the peninsula as a result of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC Million Trees initiative, some questions concerning the plantings arose during Community Board 14's monthly

meeting this week. Jonathan Gaska, the district manager

of CB 14, addressed questions from fellow board members about damage to property and the city planting on privately owned land.

Gaska explained that any damage to property done by workers planting the trees has to be repaired by the city. He also answered an inquiry by Jerry David.

David said that, while people were happy with the plantings, some were wondering how trees were planted on what homeowners believed was private property.

"The property between the sidewalk and the unit is not yours [it belongs to the city]," Gaska said, who added that city maps could show different boundaries than what the property owner believes them to be. Plantings will continue for about another month.

"Then the season's over [for planting] and they'll return in the fall," Gaska said.
