for larger version       Masters Of Our Fate Mr. Israel requested I read David Mamet's essay in the left wing Village Voice entitled: Why I am a "Brain Dead Liberal." I already read the article. Mamet makes a case that all of us, despite our political differences, will work together to resolve our common problems. He contends government only gets in the way and make problems worse. I wonder if "brain dead conservatives" are willing to end social security, Medicare, the military, free public schools, sanitary services, inspections of meat, and police protection. Government is the community's response to common needs and does not always make our lives worse. Corporations also need government to ensure property rights. Government can serve the community if we do not allow it to become our master. At the same time without the countervailing force of strong labor unions, corporate interests control the government. Our nation needs a strong honest labor movement, honest corporations that create real wealth based on creativity and productivity and not wealth created by fraud and exploitation of the weak and powerless. We need a government that protects living standards and our borders. Our nation needs diplomacy and military force used only when necessary. We all should strive to correct the accidents and mistakes of history, not make then memorials to human misery. The sting of poverty and disaster was lessened by free education, the building of our Interstate Highway system, social security, the TVA that gave electricity to the rural south, levees built by the Army Corp of Engineers. Government is often our way of resolving our common problems and is not always to be feared. This is my basic answer to the fear of conservatives of government and not of unrestrained corporations that have now become masters of our fate.
