for larger version       FDNY-Mariners Charity Game Honors Fallen Firefighter
The Danny Suhr Bowl will involve his former FDNY Bravest Football Club and Brooklyn Mariners semipro teams, who will compete against each other in a charity game to be held at 1 p.m. at Kings Bay Field on Voorhies Avenue and Coyle Street in Brooklyn. Before Suhr died in the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Rockaway native was a captain for the FDNY football team and the Brooklyn Mariners, a semi-pro team. On the FDNY football team, Suhr played from 1985 to 1997. Suhr was also a team captain and linebacker for the Mariners, who are regarded as one of the most successful semi-pro football teams in the United States. Starring from 1984-1993, he was named the team's most valuable player in 1988 and was part of the 1991 semi-pro national championship squad. "Danny was the most consistent football player I've ever coached," said Mariners coach Pudgy Walsh on the Brooklyn Mariners website. "Simply put, he was one of the best ever." Steven Orr, a former teammate who will be present for the charity game on Saturday, remembered Suhr as a leader for both the Mariners and the FDNY. "He was a leader on every team he played on. When he graduated from Madison High School, I was two years behind him, but on that football team, he was also one of the team captains," Orr said. Suhr's wife, Nancy, and daughter, Briana, will be present at the event. Former alumni from both teams will also be present. Tickets are priced at $10 and children will be admitted free. All proceeds will be donated to the Danny Suhr Scholarship Fund. The fund was enacted in 2002 to help students who would like to play football at a private school.
After the game, more funds will be raised with an after-party at the Mariners Inn, which is located on East 35 Street and Avenue S, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
