Women Urged To Get Mammograms

New York women are being encouraged by Senator Malcolm A. Smith to receive mammogram screenings as an early Mother's Day present to themselves.

"I know that fear drives some individuals- even those who find a suspicious lump- to keep putting off," the Queens senator said. He added that 95 percent of all mammograms return with normal results.

Women over the age of 40 are advised to have a mammogram screening every one to two years to help detect breast cancer tumors.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program offers answers to anyone with questions regarding mammogram screenings. The hotline can be reached at 1-800-877-8077.

Queens residents can get more information about low or no-cost mammograms by calling the Queens Healthy Living Partnership at 718- 263-2225 or the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation at 311 and asking for mammogram information.
