for larger version       Con Edison Gives Ospreys a New Home
Last week, a team of workers from Con Ed carefully removed the nest and placed it on top of a new pole and nest platform about 30 feet from the original site. "This is a much better and safer site for the ospreys," said Don Riepe, the Jamaica Bay Guardian. "They are higher up and well away from the electrified wires. The Con Ed team did a great job in providing the nest pole and transferring the entire nest to the new site." Since DDT was banned by Executive Order in 1972, ospreys have made a remarkable comeback on Long Island. These fish-eating raptors are now nesting in most wetlands on Long Island and there are about 10 nesting pair in Jamaica Bay.
