Addabbo Supports Veteran Property Tax Rebates

City Councilman Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. is supporting an effort to ensure that all veterans will receive the same treatment in obtaining the residential property tax rebate.

By a measure passed by the state legislature and signed into law in August 2007, The Cold War Veterans Law affects those who served in the country's armed forces from September 2, 1945 to December 26, 1991.

The legislation called for local municipalities including New York City, to opt into the program. According to city sources, the city never opted in, due to a time issue.

"Unfortunately, the city did not attach itself to this important legislature," said Councilman Addabbo. "I am calling for a state Chapter Amendment to include New York City Cold War Veterans in this law.

All veterans should be able to have this property tax rebate." The councilman will introduce a resolution in April to effectuate a change in The Cold War Veterans Law. "I am hopeful the amendment can occur in the state legislature.

I look forward to working on this issue in the coming months," he concluded.
