Reading The Wrong Books
Dear Editor,

Mr. Culotta's statements deserve a reply. Stop and take a breath. I have been careful not to resort to personal attacks on you in any letter. Any references I have made are to traits that you have proudly admitted, i.e., "progressive". My sarcasm about your "Epistle To The Hopelessly Ignorant" was in recognition of your self admitted pedantry. I ask you, what insults? (Please be specific.)

Thank you for the homework assignment. Perhaps you might try a much smaller reading assignment. I suggest "Why I Am No Longer A Brain Dead Liberal" by David Mamet in the March 11 Village Voice. As for Culotta's preference for parliamentary systems, he can change the Constitution or move, whichever he prefers. As to legalizing drugs, I wrote an answer to that point, but the letter was not published. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a leading progressive intellectual, referred to such activities as "defining deviancy down." As for the Berlin Wall being frequently breached, I guess Culotta finds mines, dogs and machine guns not worth mentioning, and thinks several refugees a week is frequent. As far as redistribution is concerned, Culotta stands fact on its head. People who earn money in our system are entitled to it. Economics is not a zero sum game, the entire system is enriched when wealth is created. What is the value (other than rhetorical) of undocumented worker sweat?

Your social progressive rant is getting old. Assertions of your opinions without back up in fact or logic carry no weight. Culotta seems to believe that only perfection is acceptable in our political system, in spite of historical evidence that trying for perfection results in disaster (The Soviet Union). Also, Culotta might try reviewing his pieces for usage and grammar before he submits them to a critical public. Sloppy writing is evidence of sloppy thinking.
