Peninsula Hospital Center Dietician Icilma Southwell, RD, Auxiliary President Sheila Schwartz, Nutritionist Francina Simmons, RD, Hospital Benefactor and Community Advisory Council member Esther Rosenthal and Rockaway resident Angela Guarino all took part in the Nutrition Day Festivities at Peninsula Hospital Center. Residents from throughout the Rockaways came to Peninsula Hospital Center this week to participate in the Hospital Center's Nutrition Day.

Clinical Nutrition Manager Rachel Hodelin-Wetzel, MSRD and her staff of clinical nutritionists served as hosts for the event the theme for which was "Step Into Good Nutrition Health".

Tables were set up around the perimeter of the Meditation Room featuring healthy eating tips for diabetics, portion control information for those who are overweight, cholesterol screening and body fat analysis for those who want to keep a check on their cardiovascular health.

Much information was provided about keeping healthy as well as keeping a growing family healthy and on the path to good nutrition habits.

There were presentations on "Portion Distortions" and cooking tips for preparing more nutritious meals. Jim Shewark of the Hospital Center's dietary staff gave cooking demonstrations to reinforce the message of the day: making and preparing the right food choices to ensure good nutrition. The day was capped off when the nutritionists hosted a few enjoyable games for the attendees including Nutrition Jeopardy and Bingo.

Lots of goodies including nutritional snacks were distributed to attendees and a good, sometimes eye-opening, and health-conscious time was had by all.

Anyone wishing a nutritional presentation for their organization should call Peninsula Hospital Center's Speaker's Bureau at 718-734-2506.
