Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), in conjunction with PS 114 students and their parents, is proud to present "Structure 2: An Exhibition of Artwork Created by PS 114 Student and Their Parents." The reception and exhibit will be held in RAA's sTudio 6 Gallery in the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) @ Fort Tilden on Tuesday, April 1 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will showcase the paintings and sculptures children and parents created in after school workshops led by RAA instructors.

The subject matter of the show is based upon the continents and ancient civilizations the children have learned about through the Core Knowledge Curriculum. Each different civilization and geographic area has its own style of architecture and use of inherent building materials. The children have depicted various architectural styles and produced culturally representative artworks in both their paintings and sculptures.

"Structure 2," the student/parent exhibit, will be presented in conjunction with RAA's "Structure," an exhibition of work by professional artists that explores the artistic nature of architecture, buildings, bridges and anything man-made, presently on view in sTudio 7 Gallery through April 6.

The children's work will be displayed in the same professional manner as the work of the adult artists. Artists will also be on hand to answer questions, discuss careers as artists and the styles and techniques used to create their works of art.

This week's column marks ten years, exactly, that I have been writing RAA's "From the Artist's Studio." I am very proud of that fact. Like the USPO, through rain, sleet, computer failures and whatever man, machine or nature have thrown under the wheels of this vehicle, it has kept rolling - 52 weeks a year, for a decade.

Susan Locke, artist and publisher of The Wave, began the column at about the time RAA came into existence, writing it on a non-regular basis. Ten years ago, RAA president, Geoff Rawling asked if I could write it on a weekly basis and I said, yes. For these many years, I have attempted to inform; to expose to the residents of this peninsula, the cultural riches of our community and the wider potential it can achieve, in the context of a broader, non-provincial view. I have also tried to inform the world outside our community of all that we have to offer; and to help bring to us some of the cultural and expressive resources available to our young people and adults.

I am most grateful to the colleagues and friends who have informed, critiqued and supported this column; to the public who reads it; to the staff at The Wave; and to the artists, teachers, parents and children who provide the stuff of this column - their creativity, their accomplishments and their dedication. Thank you. I am proud of us all.
