for larger version       Litter Is Not Prayer I would never want to be a person who willingly interferes with the rights of any person to express him or herself through prayer. No one has the right to do that. I do, however, strongly object to the custom that is wide spread in our Indian community of saying prayers on our local beaches and then leaving bits of colored cloth, flowers tied together with string and coconut shells strewn over the sand. The string is a danger to the birds. The cloth is unsightly and the coconuts would actually provide food for the birds if they were broken open so that the birds could get at the meat inside. I strongly appeal to these people to remove the refuse from the beaches when they are finished praying. All the parking lots along Cross Bay Boulevard have garbage cans. Please use them.
