The Pointer Sisters first started their music career as a duo, performing as "Pointers, a Pair." Soon after, sister Anita joined the group and they toured as a trio. The girls opened for such acts as Grace Slick, Boz Scaggs, and Elvin Bishop. While supporting Bishop at a nightclub appearance in 1971, the Pointer Sisters were signed to their first record deal with Atlantic Records. The girls were then signed to the Blue Thumb record label and released their self-titled debut album in 1973. Their funk cover of "Yes We Can Can" reached number 11 on the pop charts and would go on to establish itself as an R&B classic. Their second album, That's a Plenty, produced the country single "Fairytale" and earned the group the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The girls were also nominated as songwriters for the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. The song was later covered by Elvis Presley. The girls earned another Grammy nomination for their number one R&B single, "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)," from their third album, Steppin'. In 1980, their single, "He's So Shy," reached number three on the charts, followed by "Slow Hand" (#2) and "I'm So Excited." In 1983, the Pointer Sisters released their biggest-selling album, Break Out. They achieved four Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles in a row. "Automatic" reached #5, "Jump (For My Love)" reached #3, a remix of "I'm so Excited" reached #9, and "Neutron Dance" reached #6. They received Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Jump (For My Love)" and Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices for "Automatic." The Pointer Sisters entertained US troops in the Persian Gulf in 1991 with Bob Hope, and were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. In 2005, they collaborated with Natalia on "Sisters are Doing It for Themselves," a single that peaked at #2 on the Belgian Charts. In 2006 they had a 10-date run of sold-out shows with Natalia in Antwerp.
