All of this is not a good sign, considering boards on the beach side are in worse shape than they were when the season ended last year. There are jagged and rotted boards, some with dangerously protruding nails, as well as missing boards. Katherine Hanley walks the boardwalk every day. "This is an accident waiting to happen," said Hanley, a Caffrey Avenue resident on Saturday, as she pointed out the hazards to The Wave. "Nobody gives a damn about Far Rockaway." An unidentified woman pushing a wheelchair agreed, saying it was dangerous - not only for wheelchairs - but for children on bikes, as well.
In an e-mail to The Wave on Wednesday, Trish Bertuccio of Parks gave an update on the progress of the repairs. "The work has been ongoing at the boardwalk," said Bertuccio. "The North Side of the boardwalk between Beach 20 and 23 is under construction now, and the contractors will start the south side after the north is complete.
"The plan is still to have the boardwalks finished by Memorial Day so beachgoers can enjoy the new boardwalk just in time for the season."
