Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Boardwalk Blaze
Teens Seen Running From Scene

Firefighters from a number of local fire companies responded on Tuesday afternoon to a smoky fire on the boardwalk at Beach 59 Street. Police sources say that two teens were observed running from the scene just as bystanders called news of the growing fire to the 911 emergency system at 1:15 p.m., but cops were unable to corral the two. Firefighters arrived on the scene just minutes after the call and had to tear down a retaining wall to get to the fire. All photos by Howard Schwach
Firefighters used picks and a portable saw to cut through the wall before they could bring hoses to bear on the fire.
Firefighters shoot hoses at the spreading fire. It took nearly 20 minutes to put out the stubborn blaze.
Personnel from the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) stood by in case they were needed, but sources say that nobody was injured by the fire. The boardwalk suffered extensive damage.
