File Tax Returns For Economic Stimulus Checks

Queens Assemblymember Michele R. Titus would like to remind residents to file a 2007 federal income tax return, even if they are not normally required to do so, in order to qualify for the economic stimulus payment. The economic stimulus payment is part of a $150 billion plan to help strengthen the weak economy.

Normally, certain Social Security recipients, railroad retirees, people receiving benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and taxpayers with an income level below a certain level, are exempt from filing tax returns. However, the stimulus payment, which will be given to more than 130 million households in May, will only be issued to those who file tax returns.

Taxpayers with at least $3,000 of qualifying income who file may be eligible for a $300 payment or $600 on a joint return.
