Test The Memories This letter was sent in response to the historic "map" of the Far Rockaway shopping area, circa 1950's, that ran in last week's paper. To fill in the blanks in the February 29 Wave really tests the memories of us old timers (no apostrophe). Let's start on Mott Avenue (north side). The railroad had a building on the street with a newsstand opposite the staircase to the trains. I recall the taxi stand and the auto school was to the right of the trestle. There was a store (a 1940/50 version of today's 24 hour store) with newspapers, magazines, coffee shop at the corner of Mott and Central. There was a print shop to the right of the Gem Theatre. Across 19 Street was the bank (now Chase), a 1940's market, the Sunrise, next to the church. An A&P market was between the post office and the police station. The Masonic Temple was across from the post office. On Central Avenue, Whelan's had the corner shop, then Thom McAnn Shoes, Meyer's Clothing Store, Woolworth's, Barton's, Central Deli (Chinese restaurant upstairs). A furniture store (Neve's) Weisenfeld's Jewelry, Victoria Bake Shop, Grant's, stationery store (with dancing school and arcade bowling upstairs). Morton's was further down the block, then another supermarket. On the Cushman's bakery side, there was another market. Dilbert's near Elfenbein's Bake Shop, Jack's Clothing, RKO Columbia, a VIM store (not the current). The Wave had a 1957 winter picture in a recent issue. An optician was near the RKO Strand, with the PAL upstairs. I'll be 69 this month and maybe we could compare notes with Howie Schwach who is a few months younger than me.
