Make Far Rockaway High School A Vocational School
Dear Editor,

The students that attended Far Rockaway High School proved they didn't want an academic education. Why not turn the school into a variety of vocational courses? Teach the kids something that can support them like hairdressing, dressmaking, mechanical repairs, air conditioning and heating, plastering, painting, electrical or plumbing. You can even have someone who works in the field as teachers. You can even have work/study programs to allow the students to try the field they are interested in. Come on, Board of Education, reach out to the real world, the working world and give the kids something interesting, different, and promising. We used to be a hard working nation. Now everything you pick up, buy, use, and see is made by the hard working Chinese people.

I totally agree with the writer. The drop out rate is ridiculously high. I believe that if students had the opportunity to learn a trade and were given the opportunity to work in a (work/study)program more students would become interested in their education and perhaps they would stay in school. Of course academics is important and it must be included in the curriculum, however in today's time young adults need something to keep them busy. Vocational training can be beneficial for many students and this will help them learn a skill for the future.
