PHC Celebrates National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month and Peninsula Hospital Center, an affiliate of North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, is urging everyone to "Take the First Steps" towards making the right choices for ensuring good nutrition and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Clinical Nutrition Manager Rachel Hodelin-Wetzel, MSRD, believes that, "There is no better time than National Nutrition Month to step into good nutrition." Toward that end, Hodelin- Wetzel has scheduled a Community Nutrition Day for Tuesday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Meditation Room of Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation.

Nutrition Day is open to everyone in the community who wants to learn more about eating healthy for life. There will be lectures on "portion distortions"; healthy eating, and cooking tips for preparing more nutritious meals, and a cooking demonstration. Additionally, fun games are planned for the event including Nutrition Jeopardy and Bingo, with prizes and a raffle.

In-house, the Nutrition Department treated the Hospital Center staff to a selection of specially prepared healthconscious menu items daily. In addition, on Monday, March 10 - National Nutrition Day - the hospital's dieticians welcomed one and all into the Executive Dining Room where all employees had the opportunity to ask questions specific to their personal dietary needs. Body fat analysis (BMI) screenings were offered for those wanting to keep a check on their cardiovascular health and nutritious snacks were served.

The entire community is invited to come out for Nutrition Day on Tuesday, March 25. The event will be held in the Meditation Room, located directly adjacent to the Hospital Center, in Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation at 50-15 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway.
