A Ghost Story
By Rachel Vasilets

Creaking floorboards, mysterious noises in the night and misplaced objects can make people feel jumpy and lead them to believe something else is out there. For Carolann Crowley, a Broad Channel resident, these events led her to research the history of her house and the death of its original owner, leading her to believe her house was haunted.

Crowley details her interactions with the ghost of her house in A Haunting in Broad Channel, a concise 43- page self-published book. The book opens with the day Crowley and her husband, Brian, discovered the house in 1996 and ends in the present day where Crowley still has experiences with her ghost.

The author believes the ghost in her house is Mary Connor, the wife of the original owner of the house. Connor hung herself in the garage connected to the house in 1965, after suffering through four miscarriages.

Crowley began paying more attention to her experiences after unexplained noises and vibrations confirmed her suspicions that her house was haunted. Her suspicions grew even stronger when, in 2003, her mother saw an apparition in the living room that she believed to be Connor.

In 2005, Crowley began to record ghost voices, electronic voice phenomenon (EVPs). As she played her recordings, she heard voices saying names and leaving messages, such as, "I am dead."

Crowley's story was recently featured on an episode of Paranormal State, a television show that documents hauntings in various locations. The show airs on the A&E network. Crowley's book reads like a journal, at times, as she describes in detail the haunting of her home and what she felt when no one believed her.

In an attempt to get Connor to cross over, Crowley asks a priest bless the house.

If you're easily spooked don't read it when you're home alone.
