Health & Harmony
Environmental Toxins
By Dr. Nancy Gahles

DR. NANCY GAHLES
As I logged onto AOL, I was shocked to see the banner alerting us to the fact that there are pharmaceuticals abundant in our drinking water. I am aware of the fact that we are consuming far more drugs than are necessary or safe. According to a Nielsen report, the number of U.S. prescriptions rose over 12 percent in the last five years to 3.7 billion and over-the-counter drugs are at 3.3 billion. I am aware that we are being led like lambs to the slaughter every day by commercials with cute acronyms and jingles that make you hum to the tune of RLS (restless leg syndrome) or the dream of the perfect, romantic sex life that the ED (erectile dysfunction) drugs will provide. Of course, after the major push for purchase is over, we read about the ineffectiveness and the recalls due to undisclosed hazards to humanity.

I was unaware, however, that these pharmaceuticals are being excreted into our watersheds, the natural sources of our water supply, and delivered for our drinking use WITHOUT testing, detection or removal systems. In fact, the FDA has no safety limits set for drugs in water nor does the federal government require testing. It appears to be the Wild West out there where anything goes and it does indeed go, right into our systems and those of our children and our unborn children.

Testing of an upstate New York watershed found trace concentrations of heart medicine, infection fighters, estrogen, anti-convulsants, a mood stabilizer and a tranquilizer. The word "trace" is the lynchpin for "authorities' to hang their hat on when asked about toxicity. They always say that the concentration is too small to have any effect. What I do know about a principal of healing in a medical system called homeopathy, which has been in effect for over two hundred years, is that the "minimal" dose is the most effective in stimulating activity of the organism. One spokesperson from the department of environmental technology for Merck & Co, a drug manufacturer, was candid enough to say that there is genuine concern that these compounds, even in small concentrations, could be causing

impact to human health and to the aquatic organisms.

Certainly, if it is diluted in water, another factor of changing the molecular structure of the water comes into play. All of these factors are only a few of those that we know can change the purity of water. What looms larger is what we don't know. What does the water become when it is impregnated with one or all of these drugs in combination? We do know that adding chlorine to some pharmaceutical compounds makes them more toxic. We do know that chlorine is added to our water systems. What effect does this water have on human beings over time? What effect does it have on an individual? Considering the unique composition of each person, the totality of their inherent genetic history and their present biological history, one man's meat may be another man's poison. In other words, one person can drink contaminated water with little or no effect while another develops serious consequences. We are seeing an unbelievable rise in autism where no one causation can be discerned. What if our contaminated water supply is a causative factor?

NYC water officials issued a statement that said that the drinking water of New York City meets all federal and state regulations regarding quality. Unfortunately, the regulations do not address trace pharmaceuticals.

At present, there is a technology called reverse osmosis that will remove almost all pharmaceutical contaminants. I do not know of any water companies that use this process. I would challenge any magnet science school or community organization to develop an awards/scholarship project focusing on bringing this process into the city's watersheds and our bottled water companies. I would encourage all of us, as consumers, to become conscious consumers. Write to our legislators and to the companies who make the bottled water that you drink and demand accountability. Change happens from within.

This peninsula in particular, as a microcosm of the whole, is suffering from bombardment of environmental toxins, one of which is the cell tower and electromagnetic frequencies ( EMF) in general. One thing I know for sure is that the technology needed for communication systems is here to stay. We do need the quality and speed of transmission that these systems offer. That being said, we know that our exposure to these EMF's will increase over time.

Once again, we do not know the long term effects that this exposure will have on human beings. We do know that we are all exposed to low level frequencies from every red LED display in our homes and workplaces on a daily basis as well as from our cell phones and computers. We do not know what the cumulative effects will be on us. We do know that EMF's do not promote health. We do know that preliminary studies suggest causal relationships between EMF's and disease. A recent study from Israel found a relationship between cell phone use and salivary gland tumors. Research continues to be small and needs further investigation but it is abundantly clear that we need to be proactive in consideration of our exposure and use good common sense (has that been tainted as well?).

Cell towers are appearing all over our peninsula and while I agree that we need to be part of a healthy communication network, I would stress the word HEALTHY. Concentrated sources of exposure, especially where our children congregate for most of their daytime hours or where people congregate to worship, should NOT be the focus of a cell site. The very same argument that the NYC water officials made is the one that I heard this weekend from a Verizon representative. He eloquently spewed the mathematical formulas that would justify putting a tower on a building that schools nursery aged children. His performance was designed to "assure" everyone that there is no harm in this exposure. The fact is that he doesn't know that anymore than any one of the top scientists in the world does. There has not been enough evidence to prove either point to a mathematical degree of certainty. We haven't had enough long term exposure to create the diseases that will be statistically relevant. And we certainly have no watchdog agencies looking out for us.

Again, my battle cry is to exhort you to use your common sense. We all remember how we were told that there was no evidence of contamination in the air around ground zero. We all know someone who is suffering now from exposure or who has passed on from it. Use your intuitive wisdom. Concentrated exposure increases your chances of contamination. This is but ONE of the assaults on our human organism. We need to consciously limit exposure. You could tell your child not to hold the cell phone up to their ear for too long so they can offset the continual exposure they will be getting from the cell tower at their school or place of worship. OR you can tell your school and places of worship that these should be sacred sites. As responsible leaders in our community, our schools and houses of worship should be cell free sites. This sends a powerful message to our children. Our children deserve to have safe havens for worship and education. It wasn't too long ago that smoking was allowed everywhere because it was thought to be harmless. Evidence now shows that second hand smoke causes cancer. Virtually all public places are now smoke free. Recently, college campuses have become smoke free environments as well.

The issue of considering the health effects of cell towers on the occupants of these buildings, sadly, is not the predominant one. Money is. Congregations that are faltering monetarily, whether religious or educational, are looking toward the income generated from cell tower leases to boost their income. The same holds true for apartment buildings and restaurants in our neighborhood.

The Almighty dollar trumps good sense and ethics. Words of wisdom from an esteemed financial advisor, Suzie Orman, people first, money second.

I challenge the leaders of this community to use the collective wisdom of your community to investigate safe cell site areas. Where else can these towers be placed that are far enough away from our concentrated populations to afford us the access to the technology we need, as well as to protect our children and ourselves from unnecessary exposure. Be strong enough to say NO even when the money seems too good to pass up. It is a temporary solution to a problem that has to be cured from within. Develop strategies within your communities that feed and sustain your cause on a deeper level so that membership thrives from within because it is the right thing. When we depend on external authority to sustain our cause it can only weaken us and dilute the basic message. Generating income evolves from firmly held beliefs in the community that you serve and their responsiveness to that. Abundance is a law of the universe that follows right action and belief in the consciousness of prosperity. Lack has no reality, only the belief in it does. Fear is the worst of the environmental contaminants. Fear based generation of dollars sends the wrong message to our children. Drawing on our collective strengths and courage to find a better solution sends the right message. Problem solving for the greater good of the community. Creating solutions that will serve us all over time. Working together for a cause creates communities and forms bonds that hold people together. When you participate in a project to better your life and the life of those around you, the successes are celebrated and the failures are shared. We are co-creators of our Universe. We are not victims of it. God works through people. Mr. Verizon was right about one thing. There is electromagnetic energy emitted from our own bodies. When people rise to the occasion, energy is generated. This energy creates the sufficiency to sustain life. Here is an acronym that I love. My Own Natural Energy Yield, MONEY. What you put out, is what you get back. In the currency that came from the consciousness that created it. Life invites you to participate. And with all my heart, I cheer you on!

May The Blessings Be!
